This write up on voodoo should humor my friend, Flanagan, and his intrigue of zombies because I consider each one to be as farcical as the other. The two matters are linked in my mind as being absurdly amusing and unrealistic. I do have a healthy awareness for how real it is to people here, but I won’t go any further than just that, because it is erroneous and dangerous to do so – and because it’s not true. So, what do you do when you meet persons who practice the hollow and deceptive tradition with every bit of seriousness and devotion? Ummm, you slap them over the head with a bible, duh. No, you demonstrate who the Holy Spirit of God is, and what He does.
First of all, the Holy Spirit trumps any other happenings here. Some things done in the name of voodoo do happen, and may in fact be real, but it’s not true. There’s a difference between something being real and something being true. Things the devil does are real, aren’t they? But they’re not true. He’s a copier, a manipulator, a perverter of what is good, what is right, or what is true. He can’t create, he can only distort what’s already there. I think a lot people want to hear some crazy voodoo stories, and I could give you some for sure. But we can reserve the spooky talk for a camp fire with a flashlight. I’ll tell you what’s true about it. When we walk into a voodoo house or place of worship I am very aware of the darkness there. Spiritual warfare is beyond prevalent here; it’s clear and evident. So, yes, I believe in the evil spirits that can sometimes govern our lives and have influence over our actions and attitudes. Because of that, I walk around with an air of caution knowing that the Enemy works through such things, but I don’t respect them. What?!?! You don’t respect them?? You should exalt tolerance as a virtue, come on, respect!!! Ok then, in the name of tolerance, I pronounce voodoo as real, BUT in the name of Jesus, I proclaim it a farce, and a lie straight from Hell. I’m not a tolerant person when someone needs deliverance from anything evil – zombies, voodoo, demons, or the monster under your bed. Ultimately, I don’t care what it is or how real it may be.
And on that note of ridiculousness, voodoo practitioners or witchdoctors, are said to give a types of poisons that destroy the mind and turn victims into voodoo zombies that they can control – a pharmacologically induced death trance by mixing powders and putting them in the blood stream. Other stories we hear include people flying, persons ripping their skin off their bones and putting it back, evil chants that bring drastic misfortunes, or people changing forms into animals like dogs or birds at night. I don’t need to comment on the “realness” of those things because it is real to them. I only care that that person gets a healthy dose of truth from the Holy Spirit. Again, dark and evil happenings may be real, but they are not true.
Voodoo promises those who practice it protection, money, revenge, or whatever else you could conjure up. The Holy Spirit promises truth among many other things like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control – the fruits of the Spirit. When we stack those up against each other I know which way the scales will tip. I prefer to dwell on what’s true rather than what may or may not be real. Should I tell the greater stories about the victories of the Holy Spirit and truth in people’s hearts over the realities of voodoo in people’s minds? Good, I will then. The next topics will cover The Truth.
Great write-up! Hope your next blog isn’t about Paul Pierce. I think we both agree he is, indeed, a false prophet. Keep ’em coming.
Thomas, hi! That was a really good post- the first time I have seen your blog. That’s such good perspective about our fascination with the “real but untrue”, when we should be giving credit where it is due! I’m looking forward to reading more!
